Headcanons and ephemera.

The Count is a hard-won prize Dutch had gotten from cheating at poker. A rich, drunk gambler had bet him in lieu of money, as he'd busted out hands prior. Dutch gladly took the Count, a barely-broken horse who was only three years old when Dutch got him. In that same hand, Dutch also won $250, a platinum pocket watch, and a gun of his choice on the man's tab at the local gunsmith. Dutch promptly fenced the watch and gun.
Dutch loves that horse, and spoils him, but damned if he doesn't ride that poor boy hard.

He's not a great hunter, able to count the number of times he's gone on one hand. His aim is spectacular, but he's too impatient to properly hunt. He's a middling fisherman due to Hosea teaching him how to properly use lures. Dutch doesn't like to do it, but he will if there's no other choice but to do so for survival. He thinks that the true show of middling prosperity is when he doesn't need to fish.

Dutch's first name isn't Dutch. Not that anyone knows that's just a nickname, that it's on account of his father coming over from the Netherlands. His last name is Dutch in origin, but his first name is Johannes.

He doesn't have many possessions - only enough to fill up his tent - but he aspires to have a large enough house that he could fill it with the fineries that he believes he's earned. He's envious of men in marble-floor mansions, brass fixtures, and full libraries, but wouldn't ever want all that at the cost of his freedom.

He's not a religious man, nor does he show any personal faith in a higher power, other than that of Fate and Luck. He doesn't look down upon those who do believe in something above themselves, but he personally finds it a foolish waste of mental faculties.

Dutch likes a good, hearty meal whenever he can afford it, and when he's got the chance, he'll stay in a nearby town for dinner and to sleep in a real bed. Luxury.

He has his feelings that Micah may have come into his camp under false pretenses, but he also believes that Micah is truly loyal now. He feels like he'd won a personal victory by turning Micah over to his side. He half-hopes he can do the same for Kieran.

He never respected Colm O'Driscoll's way of running things, but it only got worse once Colm started recruiting scores of men that didn't matter anything to him. Whether it was because Colm had bigger numbers, or because Colm was heartless when it came to the lives of his men, or maybe even a mix of both, Dutch has always disliked Colm on a baser level. They could get along, maybe even work together from time to time (before he shot Colm's brother, and Colm killed Annabelle,) but they never liked each other.

He likes strong-minded, hard-willed people. In his eyes, they reflect some of the best parts of himself.
